ACSM's Health/Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines-3rd Edition

ACSM's Health/Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines-3rd EditionRevised and updated to reflect the most current information from the American College of Sports Medicine, ACSM’s Health/Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines, Third Edition, outlines the proper standards and guidelines to follow for designing and operating health and fitness facilities. The book provides facility managers with the tools necessary for evaluating the quality of their facilities, staff, and programs, and it shows them what they must do to maintain the standard of care that they offer their members and users. Facility managers will also get tips on what services, equipment, or programming they should provide to enhance the overall experience at their facility, thereby increasing and retaining membership.

By incorporating the views of industry trade organizations and fitness associations, this new third edition represents an up-to-date industry consensus on accepted standards (the minimal performance expectations each facility must meet) and guidelines (recommendations for each facility achieving higher than minimal expectations) for staffing, programming, safety, design, and equipment. The following are updates and enhancements to this new edition: • A thorough presentation of standards and guidelines addressing all aspects of facility management, such as risk management and emergency planning, pre-activity screening, orientation, education, supervision, staff qualifications, facility design and construction, facility equipment, signage, and operational practices • Explanations about why compliance to the standards is beneficial to health and fitness facilities • Recommendations concerning the development of technological advances, such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs) • Related federal laws, including the OSHA blood-borne pathogen rule, employment laws, and the Federal Privacy Act, so that facility managers can protect their members as well as their businesses • ACSM position statements and information from the most recent ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (2006) • A substantial increase in the supplemental materials and forms featured in the appendixes, providing even more specific detailed information for various types of facilities

ACSM’s Health/Fitness Facility Standards and Guidelines, Third Edition, is far more applicable than previous editions. By organizing the content into chapters that feature reviews and discussions of specific focal points as well as many practical applications, the material is easy to apply in real-world situations. Each chapter is focused on a specific issue and addresses both the standards and guidelines that pertain to that issue.

As a result, facility managers in every setting can gain a clear understanding of how to put the recommendations into practice, whether in a community or workplace facility, school, hotel, or spa. By measuring their facilities against the recommendations, managers can enhance the services they deliver to facility members.

Fitness Professional's Handbook - 5th Edition

Fitness Professional's Handbook - 5th EditionFitness Professional’s Handbook, Fifth Edition, is back with a new title, an expanded scope, and thoroughly updated material. With three new chapters, numerous ancillaries, and material that reflect the current American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines, this text will allow both students and professionals to stay abreast of the latest research and information in the field.

Formerly titled Health Fitness Instructor’s Handbook, this full-color text has undergone a title change to better reflect its extensive use in the field. Reflective of updates made in the seventh edition of ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, it serves as an essential text for those seeking ACSM health/fitness instructor certification and an invaluable reference for certified fitness professionals striving to stay informed amid ongoing research advances.

Every chapter has been updated based on the latest standards, guidelines, and research, allowing readers to explore the newest theories, research findings, and current issues in the field. The following are among the most significant changes to the text:
• A completely rewritten chapter on health appraisal that focuses on the sequence of steps to follow in screening participants
• Updates based on the most recent dietary guidelines and current standards for nutritional intake
• A thorough discussion of how to develop effective exercise prescriptions for strength and endurance in a very small space
• A new chapter that focuses on yoga, Pilates, and other mind–body exercises
• Additional insight from an expert providing real-life experiences in both fitness- and hospital-based programs and details regarding budget development

Through this text, students with little or no background in fitness testing and prescription will learn to screen participants, carry out standardized fitness tests to evaluate major components of fitness, and write appropriate fitness prescriptions. They will also learn how to apply this information to special populations, including children, older adults, women, or those with chronic disease (e.g., hypertension) or a specific condition (e.g., pregnancy). To aid readers with comprehension, the text retains the best features of previous editions, such as reproducible forms, useful key points, interesting sidebars, case study questions and answers, key terms and glossary, and extensive references throughout the book.

The text features an array of ancillaries, making it easy for instructors to develop and effectively teach their course. All materials are offered through a convenient product-specific Web site and include a new instructor guide, a revised test bank, and a PowerPoint presentation package that includes art, photos, and tables pulled from the text. In addition, the text’s attention to detail regarding the most common fitness tests allows it to be seamlessly integrated into lab experiences associated with fitness assessment.

Fitness Professional’s Handbook, Fifth Edition, provides readers with comprehensive information on the fundamentals of fitness, exercise physiology, and biomechanics. Updates on assessing muscular fitness, applying guidelines for strength and muscular endurance training for diverse populations, preventing low back pain, and interpreting nutritional guidelines will allow readers to better understand the role of physical activity in the quality of life and how to follow practical guidelines for screening, testing, supervising, and modifying activity for various populations. As such, it will be a useful text for students and a valuable reference for practitioners.

Research On Animals Influenced By Perceptions Of Gender

In a recent study published in Animal Behaviour, biology researchers Kristina Karlsson Green and Josefin Madjidian at Lund University in Sweden have shown that animals' and plants' traits and behaviour in sexual conflicts are coloured by a human viewpoint. They want to raise awareness of the issue and provoke discussion among their colleagues in order to promote objectivity and broaden the research field.

Lund researchers Kristina Karlsson Green and Josefin Madjidian have studied and measured how male and female traits and behaviour in animals' and plants' sexual conflicts are described in academic literature and also what parameters are incorporated for each sex in mathematical models of sexual conflict.

"We have found evidence of choices and interpretations that may build on researchers' own, possibly subconscious, perception of male and female. We have now identified and quantified terms used to describe male and female in sexual conflict research and seen that different terms are used depending on the sex being described. It is not just something we think and suppose", says Kristina Karlsson Green from the Department of Biology at Lund University.

Sexual conflicts among animals and plants mean that the male and the female disagree in various ways on mating and the raising of young. Research on these sexual conflicts is an area that is growing rapidly. Therefore, it is especially important to make other researchers aware of and alert to the fact that their own frames of reference pose a risk, say Kristina Karlsson Green and Josefin Madjidian.

Behaviour that originates from a sexual conflict always has a negative effect on the other partner and such behaviour should therefore be described in the same manner and using the same terms. It is thus possible to avoid making a subconscious distinction between the sexes. The two researchers claim that this is not the case today.

"In the literature, the male is described more in terms of activities to promote his own interests, while the female is described in more passive terms, such as that her behaviour is merely a reaction to that of the male. This is despite the fact that the behaviour of both sexes has a negative impact on the other partner while promoting the partner's own interests", says Josefin Madjidian.

Kristina Karlsson Green says that researchers are not always aware of their own perceptions of gender, but that it is important to be alert to these.

"Otherwise the researchers could interpret the results incorrectly, or miss parts of the conflict, such as the possibility of negative effects on the male of the female's behaviour", says Kristina Karlsson Green.

ORange Wavefront Aberrometer Proves Successful In Determining Refraction In Cataract Patients Who Previously Had LASIK Surgery

WaveTec Vision, the leader in wavefront-guided custom cataract™ surgery, announced today that its ORange® intraoperative wavefront aberrometer has been shown to be more predictable in determining refraction in the post-refractive eye, than any other post-LASIK formula currently available.

"Following LASIK, patients expect a lifetime of quality uncorrected vision. Unfortunately, these same patients are the most difficult to predict the optimal IOL power when they develop cataracts"

Wavefront custom cataract aberrometry with ORange is a breakthrough in modern cataract surgery. The technology has been clinically proven to increase accuracy and improve refractive outcomes: 73 percent of procedures are within 0.5D of intended target, versus 58 percent with traditional cataract surgery using standard method biometry.

"Following LASIK, patients expect a lifetime of quality uncorrected vision. Unfortunately, these same patients are the most difficult to predict the optimal IOL power when they develop cataracts," Eric Donnenfeld, MD said. "WaveTec's ORange, in my experience and now documented in studies, is the best technology to improve refractive outcomes and overall patient satisfaction in post LASIK eyes."

A patented diagnostic breakthrough, ORange allows cataract surgeons - for the first time - to measure refraction during surgery, so they can precisely predict and customize how their patients will see following the procedure.

The new post-LASIK coefficients which are part of the recently released ORange v2.6 software upgrade, will greatly improve post operative cataract refractive outcomes for patients having undergone previous corneal refractive surgery.

Building Healthy Communities: Los Angeles Region announced today the successful enrollment of nearly 100 families into no-cost and low-cost health coverage programs including, Medi-Cal and the state's children health insurance program Healthy Families.

"Which is why we are using the lessons we learn from events like these to inform policy makers of the successes, as well as the barriers, these families are facing throughout the process."

"We are proud of the resources we were able to provide to so many families in just one day," said Charles Fields, Los Angeles Region Program Manager for The California Endowment. "Our successes today illustrate the importance of partnerships within a community. Only by working together can we really make a difference in the health of our children."

The health care enrollment events marked the launch of a series of more than 20 health insurance enrollment fairs starting today and continuing through April 18 in collaboration with Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County in observation of the one-year anniversary of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This is the first time the Building Healthy Communities of Long Beach, Boyle Heights and South Los Angeles have joined together in a regional partnership.

Today's enrollment fairs and the month long series of enrollment events are helping Californians like Los Angeles resident Patty Trujillo.

Trujillo has three children under the age of 13 and is unemployed, as is her husband. Fortunately, the family discovered they were eligible for and enrolled in Medi-Cal. For Trujillo, having her family properly covered by Medi-Cal means that if one of her children is in need of emergency services, they will receive the critical medical support necessary, while not incurring exorbitant medical bills, especially during emergency services. Furthermore, having health coverage means she can access preventive care to help keep her family healthy.

"As a parent, I understand the importance of providing health care for our children," said Trujillo who was expecting at the time her family lost medical coverage. "But I also understand how complicated it can be, which I why I am so thankful that there are organizations willing to help families like mine receive the coverage and resources available to us."

"We anticipate that many more families will become eligible for health care in 2014," said Barbara Siegel of Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County. "Which is why we are using the lessons we learn from events like these to inform policy makers of the successes, as well as the barriers, these families are facing throughout the process."

About Building Healthy Communities

Building Healthy Communities is a 10-year, $1 billion plan of The California Endowment. In connection with staff-led, statewide policy initiatives, 14 communities, including South Los Angeles, Boyle Heights and Long Beach, are taking action to make where they live healthier. They're doing this by improving employment opportunities, education, housing, neighborhood safety, unhealthy environmental conditions, access to healthy food and more. The goal: to create places where children are healthy, safe and ready to learn. Ultimately, we're aiming at nothing less than a transformation in the way all of us think about and support health for all Californians.

Major EU Project To Study The Health Of Migrants From North Africa

The Centre for Primary Health Care Research aims to improve the conditions for immigrants to the EU through research and by providing recommendations for health policy measures. The CPF will coordinate the Swedish contribution to a major EU project that has received EUR 2 million to study the health of migrants from North Africa.

"We are pleased to have been entrusted with the coordination of the Swedish contribution to such a complex, exciting and important EU project, which puts the health and quality of life of North African migrants in focus", says Jan Sundquist, Director of the Centre for Primary Health Care Research (CPF), a research centre operated jointly by Lund University and Region Skåne.

Human health is complex, even in a single population. For migrants, whose life situation is always influenced by both their host country and their country of origin, the picture is even more complicated.

"It is therefore important to map health, diseases and use of health care services for immigrants and to compare the data with that for the native population. However, such analyses would be incomplete if the same parameters were not also studied in the country of origin", says Jan Sundquist.

The project, which is called EU and North African Migrants: Health and Health Systems (EUNAM), has assembled a team of experts from Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, France, Italy, Germany, Slovenia and Sweden, whose combined experience covers all health aspects of the migration cycle. The group will look at the health situation both in the North African partner countries of Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, from which a large number of immigrants to the EU come, and for migrants living in Europe.

France, Italy, Germany, Slovenia and Sweden are not only recipients of North African migrants, but also have a large number of immigrants from other regions. This allows comparisons to be made between different migrant groups.

"Collectively, the group of experts has a lot of experience of disease prevention work and has access to material and registers containing information on population health and disease patterns and the effects these have on the health care system", says Jan Sundquist.

A lot of the data that will be used in the study has already been compiled by the participating countries. The participants will have access to these unique sources of data.

"We have a good starting point from which to be able to deliver research-based evaluations and recommendations for scientific and health policy measures that will improve conditions for immigrants to the EU", concludes Jan Sundquist.
